BAZE, RALPH, DOB 7-1-55, was sentenced to death February 4, 1994 in Rowan County for the murder of two police officers. On January 30, 1992 a Powell County Deputy, Arthur Briscoe, went to Baze’s home regarding warrants from Ohio. He returned with Sheriff Steve Bennett. BOWLING, RONNIE LEE, DOB 12-5-68, was sentenced to death December 9, 1992 in Laurel County for the murder of two gas station attendants in two separate robberies. Bowling, from Clay County, Kentucky, shot and killed Ronald Smith, a London, Kentucky service station attendant during the early morning of January 20, 1989. Again, in the early morning of February 22, 1989 Marvin Hensley, a service station manager in London, Kentucky was robbed and killed. Bowling was arrested February 25, 1989. BOWLING, THOMAS C., DOB 1-18-53, was sentenced to death January 4, 1991 in Fayette County for the shooting deaths of Eddie and Tina Early in Lexington, Kentucky. The husband and wife were shot on the morning of April 9, 1990 while sitting in their car before opening their family-owned dry cleaning business; their 2-year-old child was wounded. BROWN, PHILLIP, DOB 8-31-80, on January 12, 2001, the Kentucky State Police received a call reporting a death inside the city limits of Columbia, Adair County, KY.  Upon arrival at the scene the investigator found the body of Sherry Bland. Ms. Bland appeared to have been beaten with a blunt instrument and stabbed. After leaving the scene and interviewing witnesses it was learned that a 27" color television was missing.
   On August 13, 2002, Phillip Brown was indicted on case 02CR00101, charging him with Murder, first-degree burglary and first-degree robbery. Brown was arraigned on September 15, 2002.  On November 12, 2003 he was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for a period of 25 years on the charge of murder, 15 years on the charge of first-degree burglary, and 10-years on the first-degree robbery charge. The 15-year sentence and the 10-year sentence were to be served consecutively, for a total of 25 years, but concurrently to the life sentence.
   The case was appealed. A change of venue was granted transferring the case from Adair Circuit to Warren Circuit Court.  On May 12, 2006 the Jury returned the verdict of guilty on the charge of murder, and recommended Death.  The jury returned a verdict of guilty on the charge of first-degree burglary and recommended a sentence of 20 years.  They also returned a guilty verdict on the charge of first-degree robbery and recommended 25 years.  The burglary and robbery charges were ordered to be served consecutively with each other.
   On August 19, 2006 Brown was sentenced to Death for murder. He was also sentenced to 20 years for each of the robbery and burglary charges, to be served consecutively for a total of 40 years.

CAUDILL, VIRGINIA, DOB 9-10-60, was sentenced to death March 24, 2000 in Fayette County for murder, robbery I, burglary I, arson II and tampering with physical evidence. On March 15, 1998, Caudill and accomplice Johnathan Wayne Goforth entered the home of a 73 year old female, beat her to death and then burglarized her home. They then placed her body in the trunk of her own vehicle and drove her to a rural area in Fayette County and set the car on fire. Image of Death Row Inmate Caudill.
CHAPMAN, MARCO ALLEN, DOB 9-4-71, was convicted of murder, 2 counts; attempted murder, 2 counts; rape I; burglary I; robbery I and PFO II.  He was formally sentenced on 12-14-2004 to death. In the early morning of August 23, 2002, Marco Chapman murdered a 7-year old girl and a 6-year old boy in their home in Warsaw, Kentucky (Gallatin County).  Both the children's throats had been slit and they had multiple lacerations and stab wounds on their bodies.  Their 10-year old sister played dead after being stabbed several times.  The children's mother's hands were bound with duct tape and she was tied to a bed frame.  She was raped and stabbed in the chest with a knife that broke off in her chest.  She was later stabbed with a larger knife and left for dead.  After stabbing the victims, Chapman burglarized the home and left the scene.  He was arrested later the same day by state police in West Virginia.  He received a change of venue from Gallatin Circuit Court to Boone Circuit Court. EPPERSON, ROGER D., DOB 5-19-50, was sentenced to death June 20, 1986 in Letcher County for the murder of Tammy Acker. The murder occurred when Epperson and two accomplices entered the home of a Fleming-Neon, Kentucky physician on the night of August 8, 1985. They choked the man unconscious, and stabbed his daughter, Tammy Acker, to death while robbing him of $1.9 million, handguns and jewelry. He was arrested in Florida on August 15, 1985. He also received a second death sentence for the murder of Bessie and Edwin Morris in their home in Gray Hawk, Kentucky on June 16, 1985. Image of Death Row Inmate Epperson.
FIELDS, SAMUEL STEVEN, DOB 11-21-71, was initially sentenced to Death on April 29, 1997 for the murder of 84-year old Bess Horton. His case was reversed and remanded on March 16, 2000. He was re-sentenced to Death on January 8, 2004. During the early morning hours of August 19, 1993, in Floyd County, Fields entered the home of Bess Horton through a back window. Field stabbed the victim in the head and slashed her throat. Ms. Horton died as a result of multiple sharp force injuries of the head and neck with exsanguinations. The large knife used to slash her throat was found protruding from her right temple area. Fields was arrested at the scene. The case was transferred to Rowan County.

FOLEY, ROBERT, DOB 9-13-56, was sentenced to death September 23, 1993 in Laurel County for the murders of two brothers, Rodney and Lynn Vaughn, during an argument at his residence on August 17, 1991 in Madison County. On April 27, 1994 he was given a second death sentence in Madison County for the murders of Kimberly Bowersock, Lillian Contino, Jerry McMillen, and Calvin Reynolds. FURNISH, FRED, DOB 12-24-67, was sentenced to death on July 8, 1999 in Kenton County for the murder of Ramona Jean Williamson. On June 25, 1998, Furnish entered into Mrs. Williamson’s Crestview Hills home, strangled the victim to death. After killing Mrs. Williamson, Furnish used her debit cards to withdraw money from her bank accounts. The jury also found Furnish guilty of robbery, burglary, theft and receiving stolen money by fraud. Furnish, who had several convictions for theft and burglary, spent nearly a dozen years behind bars in Kentucky and Indiana. Each time he was released, he soon returned to prison for another burglary. By the time he was released in April, 1997, he had hit a prison guard, adding an assault charge to his record. GARLAND, JOHN ROSCOE, DOB 7-22-42, was sentenced to death February 15, 1999 in McCreary County for triple murder. On March 9, 1997, Kentucky State Police discovered the bodies of Willa Jean Ferrier, Crystal Conaster and Chris Boswell in the rear bedroom of a mobile home shot to death in Whitley City, Kentucky. John Garland’s son, Roscoe Garland gave a statement to the officers explaining that his father was very jealous of Willa Jean Ferrier, and that she had been messing around with other men. He stated that his dad, John Garland, said he was going to kill her.

GOFORTH,  JOHNATHAN WAYNE, DOB 11-21-60, was sentenced to death March 24, 2000 in Fayette County for murder, robbery I, burglary I, arson II and tampering with physical evidence. On March 15, 1998, Goforth and accomplice  Virginia Caudill entered the home of a 73 year old female, beat her to death and then burglarized her home. HAIGHT, RANDY, DOB 7-18-52, was sentenced to death March 22, 1994 in Jefferson County for the murder of Patricia Vance and David Omer on August 22, 1985. Haight escaped from Johnson County Jail on August 18, 1985 with his girlfriend and another male inmate while awaiting trial. The bodies of Vance and Omer were discovered inside their car near Herrington Lake in Garrad County. Haight was apprehended in a cornfield in Mercer County August 23, 1985. HALVORSEN, LEIF, DOB 7-20-54, was sentenced to death September 15, 1983 in Fayette County for the participation in the murder of three people with Mitchell Willoughby, also under the death sentence. On January 13, 1983, the two men shot to death Jackqueline Greene, Joe Norman and Joey Durham in a Lexington, Kentucky apartment. HODGE, BENNY LEE, DOB 8-9-51, was sentenced to death June 20, 1986 in Letcher County along with Roger Epperson for the murder of Tammy Acker. HUNT, JAMES, DOB 10-16-48, was sentenced to death on July 28, 2006 in Floyd County for Burglary I, Wanton Engangerment in the 1st Degree and the Murder of Bettina Hunt, his estranged wife. On November 30, 2004 when the officers arrived at the scene they found the body of Bettina Hunt with bullet wounds to the arms, cheek area of the face, and a wound between the bridge of her nose and left eye. The victim’s infant granddaughter was also in the home. The victim was pronounced dead at the residence.
 Troopers were advised that Bettina Hunt’s estranged husband was involved in a one-vehicle accident approximately 200 feet from the residence. Upon further investigation and collection of evidence, James Hunt was lodged in the Pike County Detention Center charged with Murder.
 Trial began on 5/15/06. The jury returned a verdict of Guilty to Murder, Burglary, Burglary 1st Degree, and Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree. Hunt was sentenced to Death on the Murder charge. Hunt consented to allow the court to sentence him on the remaining charges.

JOHNSON, DONALD, DOB 05-25-67, was sentenced to death on October 1, 1997 in Floyd County for the stabbing death of Helen Madden. Ms. Madden’s body was found on 11/30/89 at the Bright and Clean Laundry in Hazard where she was employed. It was determined that she had also been sexually assaulted. Johnson was arrested on 12/01/89 and charged with murder, robbery and burglary. The charge of 1st Degree Sexual Assault was added later. Image of Death Row Inmate Johnson.
MATTHEWS, DAVID EUGENE, DOB 9-6-48, was sentenced to death November 11, 1982 in Jefferson County for the murders of Mary Matthews and Magdalene Cruse on June 29, 1981 in Louisville, Kentucky. Mary Matthews was his estranged wife and Magdalene Cruse was his mother-in-law. In the process of committing these crimes he burglarized his wife’s home. MEECE, WILLIAM HARRY, DOB 10-18-72,  was convicted of Murder, 3 counts; Burglary in the 1st Degree and Robbery in the 1st Degree.  He was sentenced to death on November 9, 2006 in Warren County.  On February 26, 2003 he shot Joseph and Elizabeth Wellnitz and their son, Dennis Wellnitz in their home, in Columbia, Kentucky.  Meece was orignally indicted in Adair County, case 03-CR-00020.  However, on June 30, 2006 a change of venue was entered and the case was moved to Warren County, case 06-CR-00656.

MILLS, JOHN, DOB 6-4-70, was sentenced to death October 18, 1996 in Knox County for the stabbing death of Arthur Phipps at his residence in Smokey Creek, Kentucky. On August 30, 1995 Mills stabbed Phipps 29 times with a pocket knife and stole a small amount of money. MOORE, BRIAN, DOB 12-16-57, was sentenced to death November 29, 1984 in Jefferson County for kidnapping, robbery and the murder of 79 year old Virgil Harris on August 10, 1979 in Louisville, Kentucky. PARRISH, MELVIN LEE, DOB 6-24-63, was sentenced to death on February 1, 2001 in Jefferson County for two counts of murder, criminal attempted murder, robbery I and persistent felony offender I.  On December 5, 1997, Parrish stabbed and killed a 6-month pregnant woman and her 8-year old son. SANBORN, PARRAMORE LEE, DOB 8-3-45, Sanborn was originally tried and found guilty of capital murder on March 8, 1984. The court imposed the death sentence on March 16, 1984. The Kentucky Supreme Court’s reversal of Sanborn’s conviction in June, 1988 resulted in a new trial in October, 1989. Sanborn was again found guilty of murder, kidnapping, rape and sodomy in a retrial in Louisville, Kentucky and sentenced to death May 14, 1991 in Henry County. SANDERS, DAVID LEE, DOB 8-8-60, was sentenced to death June 5, 1987 in Madison County for the murders of Jim Brandenburg and Wayne Hatch on January 28, 1987 in Madison County, Kentucky during a grocery store robbery. Image of Death Row Inmate Sanders.
SIMMONS, BEORIA A., DOB 5-17-54, was sentenced to death May 13, 1985 in Jefferson County for murder, rape, and four counts of kidnapping. In three separate cases he abducted Robin Barnes, Shannon House, and Nancy Bettman, at gunpoint, raped and killed them. These crimes occurred May 18, 1981, March 25, 1982 and March 11, 1983 respectively. On June 11, 1983 he abducted a fourth victim who managed to escape and identify Simmons. SKAGGS, DAVID, DOB 6-2-50, was sentenced to death July 13, 1982 in Barren County for two counts of murder. Skaggs entered the home of Mae and Herman Matthews, an elderly Glasgow, Kentucky couple, on May 6, 1981 and shot and robbed them. He was arrested eight days later in Indiana. SOTO, MIGUEL ANGEL, DOB 7-5-72, was sentenced to death Aug. 17, 2000 in Oldham County. On 6-29-99 Miguel SOTO shot and killed 2 individuals; Armott and Edna Porter. They were his ex-in-laws. He then shot and wounded his ex-wife, Armotta Porter , who had been living with her parents. He also shot in the direction of his three-year old daughter, Brianna Porter. He was armed with a .38 cal. revolver and a .45 cal. semi-automatic pistol. He used the .38 on Mr. Porter but it does not state which weapon he used to kill Mrs. Porter. SOTO was charged with Capital Murder, 2 counts, Death on both charges; Attempted Murder, 20 years; Burglary I, 20 years; Wanton Endangerment I, 5 years and Tampering with physical Evidence, 5 years. ST. CLAIR, MICHAEL DALE, DOB 1-15-57, was sentenced to death September 14, 1998 for Murder in Bullitt County. On October 6, 1991, in Bullitt County, Kentucky State Police was dispatched to a shooting incident on I-65 between Senora and Glendale and found an abandoned truck, which belonged to the victim. On October 8, officers responded to a scene of a body being discovered in Bullitt County off of Old Boston Road. On December 19, 1991 Michael St. Clair was arrested for the murder of Frances C. Bradey who was shot with a pistol.  St. Clair also received a second death sentence for capital kidnapping from the Hardin Circuit Court on February 20, 2001. Image of Death Row Inmate St. Clair.
STOPHER, VINCENT, DOB 7-11-72, was sentenced to death March 23, 1998 in Jefferson County. On March 10, 1997 in Jefferson County, Deputy Sheriff Gregory Hans was dispatched to the home of Vincent and Kathleen Becker. A struggle occurred whereby Stopher obtained Han’s 9mm pistol and shot Deputy Sheriff Hans.

TAYLOR, VICTOR D., DOB 4-6-60, was sentenced to death May 23, 1986 in Jefferson County for kidnapping, robbery, sodomy and murder. On September 29, 1984 Taylor and another man kidnapped at gunpoint two high school students, Scott Nelson and Richard Stephenson in Louisville, Kentucky. THOMPSON, WILLIAM EUGENE, DOB 7-26-51, was sentenced to death March 18, 1998 in Graves County. William Thompson entered a plea of guilty on January 12, 1995, to the following charges: Capital Murder, Robbery in the First Degree, and Escape in the First Degree, which occurred on May 9, 1986. William Thompson, of Pike County, Kentucky was sentenced to life for the 1986 murder of Correctional Officer Fred Cash at the Western Kentucky Farm Center in Graves County on March 18, 1998. Thompson was currently serving a life sentence at the Western Kentucky Farm Center for the offense of willful murder for hire in Pike County. While working with an inmate crew at the dairy, Thompson struck Correctional Officer Fred Cash repeatedly in the head with a hammer, dragged the body into a barn stall, and fled in the prison farm van. Police arrested Thompson in a bus station on his way to Indiana. Thompson was convicted and sentenced to death in October 1986 in Lyon County, but seven years later the state Supreme Court threw out the conviction and ordered a new trial. WHEELER, ROGER, DOB               , While on parole for 10 counts of Robbery I, Wheeler killed Nigel Malone and Nairobi Warfield. Both of the victims were stabbed multiple times. When detectives arrived at the scene they discovered the murder weapon, a pair of scissors, still in the neck of one of the victims and a blood trail leading from the victims to the streets. WHITE, KARU GENE, DOB 11-18-58, was sentenced to death March 29, 1980 in Powell County for the murder of three Breathitt County residents. On the evening of February 12, 1979 White and two accomplices entered a Haddix, Kentucky store operated by two elderly men, Charles Gross and Sam Chaney and an elderly woman Lula Gross. White and his accomplices bludgeoned to death the men and woman. They took a billfold containing $7,000, coins, and a handgun. White was arrested on July 27, 1979. Image of Death Row Inmate White.

WILSON, GREGORY L., DOB 11-11-56, was sentenced to death October 31, 1988 in Kenton County for kidnapping and murdering Deborah Pooley of Kenton County. On May 29, 1987 Wilson and a female accomplice forced Pooley into the back seat of her car. Wilson raped the victim and later strangled her while the accomplice was driving. WINDSOR, SHAWN, DOB 11-29-63, was sentenced to death on November 17, 2006.  Windsor was convicted of Murder - 2 counts and Theft by Unlawful Taking over $300.  On December 28, 2003, in Jefferson County, Windsor beat and stabbed his wife, Betty Jean Windsor and 8-year old son, Corey Windsor. At the time of the murders, there was a valid domestic violence order in effect which ordered Shawn Windsor to remain at least 500 feet away from Betty Jean Windsor and to commit no further acts of domestic violence.  After killing his wife and son he fled to Nashville,TN in his wife's car where he left it in a hospital parking garage.  Nine months later, in July of 2004, Windsor was captured in North Carolina. WOODALL, ROBERT KEITH, DOB 3-19-74, was sentenced to death on September 4, 1998 in Caldwell County for Capital Murder, Capital Kidnapping and First Degree Rape. On January 25, 1997 Robert Keith Woodall abducted Sarah Hansen from the Minit Mart parking lot in Greenville, Kentucky. He then drove to Luzerne Lake where he proceeded to rape her. Woodall beat her and used a box-cutter knife to inflict cuts in Sarah Hansen’s throat. Her body was dragged and discarded into the water. Results of an autopsy revealed that water was found in Sarah Hansen’s lungs and reports that she died as a result of drowning. Image of Death Row Inmate Woodall.
